Reiki is a holistic therapy which aims to balance, heal and harmonise all levels of the human being, body, mind, emotions and spirit. Although it is a wonderful method of receiving healing it also encourages personal and spiritual awareness, which leads to personal growth.

The word Reiki (pronounced Ray Kee in the west) can be translated as 'Universal Life Force Energy'. The 'Ki' is the life force energy which runs through all living things, including plants, trees and animals. The 'Rei' can be translated as 'wisdom and knowledge of the universe'.

Originally the system of Reiki was brought to the people by Dr. Mikao Usui who was a Japanese Buddhist priest. He was enlightened as to how Reiki could be used and also how it could be passed onto others to use. Originally used for self development it was also identified as a healing tool which could heal not only the person who used Reiki on themselves but also for the benefit of others.

It was brought to the West around the late 1930's by a woman called Hawayo Takata, who was from Hawaii. She was responsible for it travelling to the States and Canada and from there it has now spread worldwide.

Reiki is an energy which has a high vibratory rate and cannot generally be seen by the human eye. Ki, which runs through every living being or thing is always present but Reiki can generally only be received from someone who has been "attuned" to it's vibrational frequency. The attunement is passed to a student by the Reiki Master in a sacred ceremony and after receiving this the student is then able to access the Reiki energy anytime simply by intending it to flow.

If you want to know more about what Reiki is then there is a huge amount of information available either on the web or in books where you can discover much more than I have been able to impart here. It is a huge subject and you can take in as much as you want but in the end all that really matters is that it works.

The styles of Reiki I use are the traditional systems called "Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki" (Usui Natural Healing Method) and Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui Spiritual Energy Method). There are now many styles of Reiki around the world but they will all stem from this original system. The practitioner who gives the Reiki treatment is only a channel for the Reiki and offers it to the client to be taken and used for healing. The clients own body will then use the received Reiki for it's highest good, whatever that may be.
